The Taylor, Texas City Council voted unanimously, 5-0, on October 8 to approve an agreement annexing a 664-acre site for the Taylor Technology Campus, formerly known as Project Mustang, following months of local debate over the project.
The campus, developed by Big Watt Digital and PowerHouse Data Centers, sits between FM 112 and U.S. 79 and will include data centers along with on-site power generation. City officials estimate the project will generate $1.38 billion in gross tax revenue over 20 years, and the agreement includes $28.2 million in community commitments directed to city programs, Taylor ISD, and local nonprofits.
As part of the annexation agreement, the developers accepted rules on water use, noise, lighting, and property setbacks.
The project drew pushback from residents and a group called Halt Taylor Data Centers, who argued it could lead to overindustrialization and strain local water supplies and infrastructure. In response to the vote, the developers said in a statement that "Big Watt + PowerHouse welcomes the Taylor City Council's unanimous vote to advance the Taylor Technology Campus," adding that "responsible development means being a good neighbor and an engaged community partner."
